Memorial service set for military working dog
A public memorial service has been scheduled for Hasso, a
German Shepherd who served as a bomb-sniffer during tours
of duty in Iraq. The service has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Aug.
23 at
Port Hueneme VFW Post 3935, 300 Surfside Drive, Port
Hueneme. The post recognized Hasso for distinguished
service on May 25.

State budget leaves gaps in Port Hueneme city funds
With the Legislature passing a budget in July and Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger making further cuts, governmental agencies throughout the
state have had a chance to analyze the impact on local operations.

Port Hueneme stands to lose about $376,000 in transportation funds,
$275,000 borrowed from Prop. 1A revenue sharing funds and another $2.4
million in redevelopment funds, according to Robert Bravo, city financial
services director.

Beach district looks at ordinance to conserve water
Residential and commercial service users will need to be more economical
with their use of water under an ordinance proposed by the Channel Islands
Beach Community Services District. Ordinance 75, which is scheduled for a
public hearing and vote at the district’s Sept. 8 meeting, would establish
prohibited and restricted water usage for all clients served by the district.

Officials being cautious as start of school looms
Last year, the swine flu, or H1N1 virus, was a major concern in Ventura
County after a few people in the area caught the disease. “We are all
watching the development of the virus,” Debra Desmeth, assistant
superintendent of the Hueneme School District, said. “We are concerned and
watching the different schools to make sure it does not develop. Last year we
worked very closely with the county health department and we will continue to
do so through the fall.”

No injuries reported after gas leak shuts down streets
A gas leak caused during excavation for a sewer repair project took almost
seven hours to contain and resulted in the evacuation of about 150 people
from the Surfside Drive and Hueneme Road intersection Aug. 7. The leak
occurred at 11:27 a.m. when a backhoe operated by Z Pipeline Construction
struck a gas pipe, according to Sabra Moallem, a spokeswoman for the
Southern California Gas Co.
