A surfer competes in the Eat Surf competition held Oct. 31 at Silver Strand Beach.
The annual outing, sponsored by the Silver Strand Surf School, featured five teams of
men, women and children competing in a run relay, paddle surf relay, dead-man carry
and beach flags race. Chris Shoemaker, a former lifeguard, incorporated some of the
skills into the competition he founded in the 1980s. His wife, Thea, said the
competition is an informal event that emphasizes camaraderie among those
participating. “You don’t have to be a great surfer; you’re part of a team,” she said. “But
a little athletic ability will help you out a lot.” - Hueneme Pilot photo

increases, which requires a second reading and final approval at the Nov.
16 meeting. The first rate increases for both fees would occur in January.
