What happened to the ‘We’ generation?
By Norman Griffaw, Port Hueneme mayor pro tem
Somewhere along the line we have lost what The Greatest Generation possessed –the
desire to help one another in good times and bad. They knew what sacrifice really was
when it came to luxury items and even some everyday items to which we have become
so accustomed.

By Douglas Breeze, Port Hueneme City Council
In the coming weeks, residents of Port Hueneme will be receiving Proposition 218 ballots
that will allow them to object to the proposed wastewater rate increases. Similar to this
summer’s water rate adjustments, citizens can object to the proposal by mailing the
ballot (or hand delivering it) to City Hall prior to the City Council’s public hearing on the
matter at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 2.
The last thing any of us want is to raise wastewater rates, especially now during these
tough economic times. The Wastewater Enterprise Fund is required by law to be self-
sufficient, and a rate increase is now needed to meet that mandate. So the best we can
do is ensure the increase is limited to minimize the impact on ratepayers.

By now, all Port Hueneme property owners, wastewater ratepayers and solid waste
ratepayers should have received notice of the City Council’s intent to adjust wastewater and
solid waste rates. The adjustments in these rates have been a long time in coming as rates
have not been increased for these utilities since 2003, and rates are not sufficient to cover
the cost of providing these services.

By Dave Norman, city manager, Port Hueneme
When I think about all the things I buy, and where I buy them, it amazes me how many goods and services I
purchase in the roughly 4.5 square miles that is Port Hueneme. When you and I shop in Port Hueneme, you
are making a contribution to your quality of life. Of the 8.75 percent in sales tax you pay on taxable
purchases, 1.5 cents of that sales tax comes back to the city’s General Fund to pay for quality police and
library services, street repairs, senior and recreation services, and the street landscaping that tells people
they are in a different and better place when they drive into our beautiful city.

City needs to examine
creek spraying
To Port Hueneme City Council
members,
Tis the season when the effect of
the massive herbicide spraying
along the creek is readily
apparent. The grass along the
creek bank is rapidly dying along
with its roots which hold the soil in
place thus exposing it to erosion
when the rains come.
